Canine obesity

obesity dogThe obesity is the more common nutritional disease in developed societies and it is considered that 25 to 35% of the dogs are with overweight.

It is responsible for the decrease of the physical capacity of the animal, for associated diseases and, frequently, for painful locomotion. It is resulted of the excess of energy, obtained by the feeding, in relation to the energy expense of the animal. That unbalance can have origin in the own animal, behaviors problems, but also in factors associated to the established handling by the own proprietor.

Some considerations:

1 – the weight excess during the growth phase becomes worse progressively.

2 – it is responsible for the fat infiltration in the organs and for larger effort mechanic of the body.

3 – dogs with pains accomplish less exercise tends larger tendency to put on weight.

4 – it affects the psychic well-being of the animal (the lack of movements reduces the social contacts).

5 – it potentiates possibilities of complications in surgical interventions.

 Weigh loss program:

1 – to evaluate the way of interacting with the animal: to adopt other interaction types (to play, to caress, to brush) in substitution to foods in response to requests for attention.

2 – all of the members of the family should respect the program.

3 – the weight loss results of the association among the consumption of food with low energy tenor and the increase of the level of physical activity of the dog.

4 – the division of the daily dose is recommended in 3 or 4 meals, being avoided the hunger sensation.

5 – the physical exercise, adapted in a gradual way, it stimulates the energy expense and it favors the preservation of the muscular mass.

6 – it verifies in the ration package the suitable daily amount to the weight and load of the animal.

Are your animal allergic?

dogThe alimentary allergies can affect any dog or cat, but they are not so common.

The animal usually resists the protein in the food, as milk or meat. The most typical reaction in dogs is an itch dispersing for the body, while the cats develop itches in the area of the face and head. With less frequency, the reaction is vomit or diarrhea.

In some cases, the animal develops a more serious allergic reaction to the food and edemas appear. The edemas usually appear in 20 to 60 minutes, around the eyes and of the nose.

If the animal is with a very strong reaction, you will usually notice breathing problems, could take to a breathing stop. It is treated of an emergency and the animal should be taken to the veterinarian immediately.

The allergic reaction to feed can be controlled easily once discovered and avoided the responsible ingredient by the allergy.

The process of elimination of foods indicates which of them exactly causes problems. That means to do with that the animal eats a diet that never ate before. After the skin of the animal is normal, increase to the diet the suspicious foods, one of every time to discover which provokes the allergy of them.

Puppy or adult dog food?

puppyThis is one of the most common questions that I get from puppy owners. There is a lot of conflicting information out there that makes it very hard for pet owners to know which guidelines to trust. Making the transition from puppy to adult food at an appropriate time is important because there is a major shift in regards to the caloric needs and nutrition requirements of your puppy as she approaches maturity. Puppy food is very high in calories and nutritional supplements, so feeding it too long to a mature dog can result in obesity and orthopedic problems.

In general, you want to make the change to adult food when your puppy is approaching her adult height. The problem is that different breeds mature at different rates due to the wide range of variation between breeds. A rule of thumb to remember is that smaller breeds tend to mature faster than large breeds. Small breed dogs up to 30 pounds mature around 10 to 12 months of age keeping in mind that some toy breeds can mature even earlier. Medium breed dogs up to 80 pounds mature between 12 to 16 months and your Basset hound falls in this category. Large and giant breed dogs weighing more than 80 pounds can take up to two years to reach full maturity.

One final tip for puppy owners about changing food is to do it gradually. Mix in increasing amounts of the adult food with the puppy food over the course of a week while decreasing the amount of puppy food. By the end of the week you should only be feeding the adult food. Making the change gradual makes it less likely that your dog will experience loose stools and upset stomachs.

Dogs Should Not Eat Cat Food and Vice Versa

If you have a cat and a dog indoors, then you have probably caught them stealing each other’s food once in a while. For both animals, a little snack from the other’s food bowl is not a big deal. However, a cat that only eats dog food or a dog that really enjoys cat food can lead to health and feeding problems. So, before you overlook your pooch eating from the cat’s bowl, there are a few things to consider. If the habit has already started, then you need to work on ways to stop it.

It is important that you realize that cats and dogs have certain (i.e. different) nutritional requirements. If that was not the case, then you could probably find general “pet” food at grocery stores and pet stores. Cats require taurine in their diet, but they cannot produce taurine on their own. A lack of taurine can cause severe eye problems for cats, eventually leading to blindness. Tooth decay and hair loss are also side effects of insufficient taurine. In the wild, a cat will acquire taurine by eating another animal. Cat food (dry and wet) approved by the Association of American Feed Control must contain taurine. Dogs, on the other hand, can make taurine on their own; they do not need additional taurine in their diets. So, most dog food does not contain taurine. If you feed a cat strictly dog food, then irreversible health problems can and will arise.

Cats also require more protein in their diets than dogs require, and their food often has higher caloric and fat content. For a dog that eats cat food, he is consuming more calories than he should. Yes, the food may be tasty, but it can cause weight issues. Many dogs also experience digestive problems from eating cat food; although, they are usually not serious problems.

Aside from the nutritional differences between the two, you need to watch out for your pet to become a picky eater. If the dog gets to eat tasty cat food, then he may refuse to eat his own food. It is okay to let a dog or cat steal a snack from the other on occasion, but a dog should not be fed a cat diet and vice versa.

If your pets have already developed a food sharing habit, then you need to stop the habit as soon as possible. Perhaps your cat likes the dog food, because you feed him wet food. Try to give your kitty wet food every once in awhile, and see if she likes it. If you feed your dog dry food, then find a bag of food that contains larger chunks. It will be easy for your dog to break up the chunks, but a cat will have a hard time doing so. Now, if your pooch is stealing cat food, you’ll need to place the food out of the reach of the dog. It’s easy for your cat to reach food that is out of the dog’s grasp. If your dog only likes the wet cat food, then try giving him wet dog food. You can even buy packs of gravy (for cats and dogs) that can be poured over their normal dry food.

If you can’t keep the two away from each other’s food, then you are going to have to restructure your feeding schedule. The easiest thing to do is to feed both animals at the same time. You may even want to feed them in different areas of your home, keeping them away from each other while they eat. Once the pets have had their fill of food, then remove the food until the next meal. If you leave your pets’ food out all day, then you will have to come up with a way to keep the food out of the other’s reach. To keep the dog away, you can use a pet gate or set the food up high. To keep a cat away, you may have to find a deterrent to place around the food. Remember, there are many materials that cats can’t stand to walk across!

Interchanging your pets’ food as a snack is okay here and there. However, nutritional requirements of cats and dogs are different. Cats should never be on a dog food diet, and dogs should not eat loads of cat food. If the habit has already started, then you need to work on ways to stop it.

The Feeding Ritual: Negative Behaviors

Food carries a powerful message in the dog world. Puppies work for food by waiting patiently for their mother. This is a form of psychological exercise, and it’s important for a healthy state of mind.

Domestication has brought about a change in the way dogs receive their meals and in the way they behave before mealtime. Dogs will often become excited, anxious, or aggressive at the prospect of being fed. If you feed your dog when he displays negative behaviors, you are reinforcing the behavior, and it will almost certainly reoccur.

I feed many dogs at the same time with no problems. Dogs that show calm-submissive energy get to eat first, and dogs that show negative behaviors such as aggression or nervousness must wait. When these dogs project calm-submissive energy, I reward them with their meal – much like their mother or pack leader would do.

Mealtimes are a useful tool to help you connect with your dog and work to shape his demeanor. Make sure your dog has reached a calm-submissive state before you place the food bowl in front of him. By doing so, you are not only providing him with nutrition, you are helping him lead a balanced and happy life.
