Cancer treatment in cats

cancer in catsCancer is a common disease in cats, just as in other domestic species and in human beings.

The experience obtained starting from the human medicine has result in the development of treatments in animals and many used medicines were developed for the human beings’ treatment, however some used in dogs and humans are not appropriate for cats.

Most of the tumors appears starting from the transformation neoplásica of a single stem cell. Initially the tumors grow quickly, but the growth speed decreases as the size increases.

The growth fraction constitutes the most important factor than it determines the answer of a tumor to the chemotherapy, because most of the medicines is active just against cells in growth and in division. The ideal period to treat a tumor with chemotherapy is in the beginning of her development course, when the load of tumor is low, the time of duplication is short and the growth fraction is high. The cells in rest inside of a tumor they are also essential, because they form a reservoir protected starting from which a tumor can retire. Therefore, those cells determine the definitive result of the treatment.

Initially, the tumors are composed of a group of cells reasonably homogeneous, but with successive cellular divisions, genetic mutations that check phenotype properties different in the cells daughters. Therefore, the cellular population of a tumor becomes heterogeneous regarding the characteristics biochemical, morphologic and of answer to the drug.

Some tumors are resistant to the chemotherapy; for instance, many carcinoma and the malignant melanoma. Big tumors and of slow growth they are also, because of the fraction of low growth. The tumor cells, in the same way can acquire resistance through mutation.

The theoretical objective of any cancer treatment is to reduce the population of tumor cells to zero. It can be used radical chemotherapy if the intention will cure the tumor. However, in veterinary medicine, it has a balance to be reached between effectiveness and toxicity of the treatment.

The chemotherapy should be reserved for malignant tumors that knowingly answer to the medicines. It is indicated against disseminated diseases or systemic, as lymphoma, myelona, leukemia. The chemotherapy rarely has value as only treatment of solid tumors, as carcinoma, sarcoma, melanoma, in that case the surgery or radiotherapy would be the first treatment choice.

Are your animal allergic?

dogThe alimentary allergies can affect any dog or cat, but they are not so common.

The animal usually resists the protein in the food, as milk or meat. The most typical reaction in dogs is an itch dispersing for the body, while the cats develop itches in the area of the face and head. With less frequency, the reaction is vomit or diarrhea.

In some cases, the animal develops a more serious allergic reaction to the food and edemas appear. The edemas usually appear in 20 to 60 minutes, around the eyes and of the nose.

If the animal is with a very strong reaction, you will usually notice breathing problems, could take to a breathing stop. It is treated of an emergency and the animal should be taken to the veterinarian immediately.

The allergic reaction to feed can be controlled easily once discovered and avoided the responsible ingredient by the allergy.

The process of elimination of foods indicates which of them exactly causes problems. That means to do with that the animal eats a diet that never ate before. After the skin of the animal is normal, increase to the diet the suspicious foods, one of every time to discover which provokes the allergy of them.

Basic techniques of First Aid

dogWhen we thought about First Aid for domestic animals, we limited ourselves to emergencies, as a running over, or a shock, etc. However, all of the owners of animals come across daily problems, as infections in the ear, cuts in the paws or digestive problems.

Frequently, you will discover that the techniques of First Aid are useful. Those basic techniques are for hundreds of situations involving dogs and cats.

And what is more important, in situations really dramatic, they can save the life of your animal.

The contention of the animal has 3 purposes: it protects the person of being bitten by the animal; it restricts the movements of the animal, impeding that the bruise worsens and it does with that the animal is stopped to be examined and practiced medicine.

The cardiopulmonary resuscitation combines the artificial breathing with the compression expresses of the heart, what helps to move the blood for the body, when the heart for of beating.

Whenever the skin breaks up, bacteria or any other strange material, even the hair can contaminate the wound and potentially to cause infection. The bleedind is a mechanism of natural cleaning, that it helps to eliminate the dangerous substance. Don’t clean wounds with abundant bleeding, because that will just do with that they bleed more.

What is and how to avoid the rabies

dogDo you really know rabies is? Do you know like it is transmitted? Which the symptoms?

The rabies is a acute infectious disease that attacks the mammals (man and animals), caused by a virus that multiplies and spreads (outlying nerves) until the central nervous system, from where passes for the glands salivate, in which also multiplies.

The form more common of transmission it is through the contact with the saliva of the stricken animal, be through bite or lambida. The scratches also have potential of contamination, due to the intense salivation of the sick animals.

The infection source is the animal infected with the virus of rabies. In urban areas, it is mainly the dog (almost 85% of the cases) following for the cats. In rural areas, besides the dogs and cats, bats, monkeys, bovine, equine, bovid, ovinos. The wild animals are the natural reservoirs for domestic animals.

The transmission feels before the emergence of the symptoms and during the period of the disease. In the dog and in the cat this period begins from 5 to 3 days before the emergence of the symptoms.

In the animals the disease present 2 forms: the furious and the paralytic. The furious is characterized by inquietude, tendency to the attack, anorexia, later coma and death. In the paralytic the animal tends isolates and to hide at dark places, it presents paralysis in the back paws that it takes the death.

To prevent it is necessary the annual vaccination. With the lack of the vaccine, take some cares: don’t leave your animal to have contact with unknown animals and don’t leave him free in the street.

Say no to the tests in animals

Activities for cats

cat playingThe cats are less active than the dogs. Some researches calculate that the cats sleep from 16 to 18 hours a day. Who has cat agrees that they like to nap. Even if your cat is sleepy, he needs exercises to maintain healthy and to spend energy.

The cat with a lot of energy is bored and then to destroy the pieces of furniture, to drop things of the shelves, he searches the can of the garbage. The nestlings walk for the house, they arise and they get off the pieces of furniture, they walk around the table and close to the walls. Some cats need motivation to exercise.

At the market exists many toys that you stimulate the cat to play. The toys tied to a stick, balls, mice, flashlights, etc.

The persecution is good other game. It is enough to go behind your kitten until that he begins to run, then pursue him for the house.

Always leave toys to the disposition of the cat for the house and in the schedule in that you are present plays with him for some minutes, that will stimulate him.

Do you know what cognitive dysfunction is in animals?

The cognitive dysfunction is a syndrome associated with cerebral aging. The cerebral changes take to alterations in the perception, smaller answer to incentives and deficits in the learning and in the memory. Subtle signs are observed in the initial apprenticeships, calls of cognitive decline.

They were identified multiple neurological changes. It is not clear which specific changes are associated with the clinical signs of the cognitive decline.

In the affected animals it happens decrease in the number of neurons and increase of toxins, implicating the nervous transmission. Nor all the animals are affected, it usually happens in older animals. Many dogs and cats age with success and they don’t demonstrate changes in the cognitive function during the life.

The signs are: disorientation, just as losing in family atmospheres; confusion; alterations in the cycle of the period sleep/wake, including to wake up or to vocalize at night and sometimes an increase in the sleep during the day; alterations of behavior; altered activity or inactivity.

In general those animals don’t present a risk to the safety. However, some can become more irritable and to begin to demonstrate aggressive answers. Some animals can present risk for itself own, when confused, in case they get lost.

Some drugs exist for treatment. A medical evaluation is necessary so that the treatment is adapted.

Do you know some animal that suffers of cognitive dysfunction?
