Do your animal have the habit of ingesting feces?

Coprophagy is the ingestion of feces. That behavior is more observed in dogs and at first it happens with the ingestion of their own feces or the one of another animal. There are different motivations for that behavior. To involve with coprophagy is normal for most of the dogs, although it can be considered offensive on the part of the humans.

During the first weeks of life, it is necessary and normal that the mother makes stimulation to stimulate the excretion of the nestlings. She consumes, then, them fecal and urinary excrete as the nestlings eliminate them, providing a way of maintaining the clean nest to that the nestlings are walking.

Young animals use several senses to join information on his environment. To prove feces can be part of that normal exploratory behavior. Dogs in an impoverished atmosphere (empty atmospheres for long periods) they can use the coprophagy as an exploratory escape valve.

Although it is difficult for the humans to understand, the dog can find the rewarding ingestion of fecal material, due to his smell, flavor, texture, etc. That can be particularly true regarding the fecal material of cats, for which the dogs have preference for consumption.

Dogs with appetite increase can look for fecal material as middle of satiating his excessive appetite. Conditions of bad absorption, inadequate diet, they can need additional nutrients.

The dogs can discover that the coprophagy results in the owner’s immediate attention and subsequently they use the behavior to obtain her.

Although rare, some dogs practice coprophagy as oral manifestation of a compulsive upset.
